Sailing “BY the Lee” means you are sailing past the point of jibing and the wind is starting to blow on the back side of your sail. The aim is to position the boat to leeward and a bit ahead of the competition. A sailing boat will deflect the flow of the wind for several boat lengths ahead and behind it.
